Is remembering something I do, or is it something that happens to me?
Five years from now, will I walk from Hardbrücke to Escher Wyss Platz without tasting Vodka Mate on my tongue and feeling an imaginary bass tingling in my fingertips? Will I have forgotten the smell of that foreign brand of cigarettes that made me want to give up smoking? The same way that I have already forgotten about the large white linens that used to hang to dry in the very same space I spend my friday nights?
Our city, much like our memory, is constantly being rewritten, overwritten, edited, deleted. The stories of spaces are always linked to the collective memory of societies and generations. This memory is created by the overlaying and intersection of individual experiences. The new quickly becomes familiar, simultaneously details of the old slowly fade away.
How much power do we really have over our own memories, the individual and the shared? Is memory something that we can negotiate? Who is included in these negotiations?
The Zentralwäscherei is a spatial mosaic made up of memoires, visions for a future, stories and experiences of people. Some of which have worked here a lifetime, others gave their first concerts, others again spent their saturday nights losing their friends in the crowd or making new ones in the toilets. Every new use of a space surfaces a new perception, over and over again.
Join us, as we explore this subjective and fleeting perception of our surroundings and how it expresses itself in the interim uses and reuses of spaces in our urban and personal environment. The two day wash cycle at the Zentralwäscherei Zurich brings to life the different opinions, personal experiences and artistic interpretations of the topic of collective memory and spatial remembrance.
Reusing space is like doing your laundry.
Pre-wash
During the day an exhibition on interim projects juxtaposes past, present and future memories of the city. This allows for the negotiation of our collective memory and an effort to reclaim the power of subjectivity in the spaces we inhabit.
Main-wash
In the evening the space transforms into a stage for performances and musical, theatrical or movement-driven explorations of our spatial remembrance. At this point we get to rewrite, add and alter our perspectives and understanding of our environment.
Spinning
As the wash cycle comes to an end we will process our new memories by dancing them off together.
For architects, designers, researchers, visual artists:
If you’re an architect, designer, researcher, visual artist or someone who has worked on a project on the idea of interim use and reuse in urban environments, we are interested in exhibiting your work as part of our exhibition at a two-day event at the Zentralwäscherei Zurich from June 30th to July 1st 2023. We also encourage students to send in your semester or thesis projects and are interested in showing different media: photography and video, models and installations as well as drawings, paintings, text and graphic work.

We are interested in any and all practices: music, theatre, spoken word, dance and movement as well as mixed media performances for our event at Zentralwäscherei Zürich on the 30th June and 1st July.
